There is something about the stillness of a winter morning and a barren tree against the sky. No birds greeting the day that is too early and too cold for activity. No sign of life at all in the barrenness. It is almost as if someone has pressed a cosmic pause button. A breath expelled and a moment held before taking the breath that precedes action. An experience that reminds me that God awaits us in the quiet place.

A snow day forces a pause in our too busy lives – and we find that just stopping for one day is not the end of the world – in fact it is quite wonderful and natural almost as if by design. So next time why not choose your “snow day” – maybe once a week – oh, right, we already have one as part of the ten commandments, it’s called the sabbath.

There is a deep longing in each of us tied to a sense of purpose and destiny. Until we fully realize that longing we are not fully alive. It is not something we can achieve but only receive as gift. The ultimate expression that clearly defines and fulfills this for all humanity and for all time is the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Known by head, loved by heart, served by hands.
